Sangla is mostly preferred by travellers.This valley starts 57 km short of Kalpa which has been named after a beautiful & populous village Sangla. Sangla is situated on the right bank of Baspa river 17 kms. from Karcham. Journey from Karcham onwards is enjoyable and adventurous throughout the valley. The natural scenery all around and the eternal snow view are picturesque and charming. It is also known as Baspa Valley since Baspa river flows through this area. This is the most charming valley in the entire District of Kinnaur. A temple dedicated to Nages god is worth a visit & other places are Sapni, Rackchham, Kilba, Kamru Fort which can also be visited. There are post offices, banks, rest houses for the convenience of the visitors.
The Tabo Monastery, believed to be built around one thousand years ago, is deemed as the largest royal complex in the Spiti Valley. It sprawls over an approximate area of 6300 sq m, which is environed by a mud brick boundary wall. Constructed in 996 AD, this monastery houses 9 temples and 23 chortens along with a monks’ chamber and a nuns' residence. The monastery is popularly known as the Tabo-Chos-Khor, which stands for the doctrinal circle. An architectural marvel, this monastery is famous for its magnificent sculptures, stucco images and wall paintings similar to those of the Ajanta and Ellora caves. It is because of this that Tabo has been given the title of Himalayan Ajanta. Positioned next to the Tholing Gompa of Tibet, Tabo has the oldest Buddhist monastery in India which is still operational. The paintings of the monastery can be traced back to the period between the 10th and the 11th century. Sarchu is a major halt point with tented accommodation in the Himalayas on the Leh-Manali Highway, on the boundary between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh in India.
Tibetan and Indian cultures, Tabo became the birthplace of a new fusion art style known as the Indo-Tibetan style. Amongst the prominent temples of the ancient monastery in Tabo, the Temple of the Enlightened Gods, the Golden Temple and the Mystic Mandala Temple are worth mentioning. The Temple of the Enlightened Gods, also known as the Tug-Lha-khang, has an assembly hall, a sanctum and an entrance hall. A four-fold figure of the Vairocana, one of five spiritual sons of the Adi-Buddha, sits in the assembly hall. Originally constructed using pure gold, the Golden Temple was modified in the 16th century by Sengge Namgyal, an erstwhile king of Ladakh. The Mystic Mandala Temple, also known as the Initiation Temple, displays a huge painting of the Vairocana surrounded by eight Bodhisattvas or enlightened beings. The Bodhisattva Maitreya Temple is popular for a gigantic 20 ft tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha, also known as the Laughing Buddha or the Buddha of the Future. Carved doorways and picturesque mural paintings on the walls are the highlights of the Temple of Dromton, which is also known as the Brom-ston Lha-khang. The Larger Temple of Dromton, a later addition to the complex, is the second largest temple located in the Tabo Monastery complex with a floor spread over 70 sq m. The portico along with the niche of the temple adds another 42 sq m to the size. The Mahakala Vajra-bhairava Temple has been christened as the Temple of Horror. It is named so because it houses numerous idols of protective deities of the Gelukpa sect of Buddhism that are known for their ferocity. Leh Palace
The ancient Leh Palace which is just 5 km away from the Leh is under the control of Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and offers a panoramic view of the Stok Kangri and Zanskar ranges across the Indus Valley.
Shanti Stupa
The highest white beautiful stupa on a hilltop in Chanspa, Leh district is the best place to admire the beauty of Himalayas. It was built by the Japanese monks to promote world peace. Don’t forget to do a little meditation besides the Stupa which might help you get what you came here for. The nighttime view is even better.
Sangam Point
One of the most famous spots in Leh which is the meeting point of the Indus and Zanskar is known as the Sangam Point. It is an amazing sight for the onlookers as the water of the Indus River is very warm and the Zanskar is frozen.
Hemis Monastery
The Hemis Monastery is visible during a Leh Ladakh road trip. The distance between Hemis and Leh is 40kms and easily accessible by any vehicle. Interior decorated by numerous gold statues and stupas enhanced by the precious yet rare stones is worth visiting.
Drass Valley

Nubra valley is a place that cannot be missed if you are travelling to Ladakh in the summer as it is rich in sightseeing opportunities. Kargil is the second biggest town of Ladakh became popular after a war was fought over the region between India and Pakistan. There is Kargil war memorial hall in the Drass for the bravery of Indian soldier during the Kargil war. Mainattractions are -Â Rangdum Monastery, Mulbekh Monastery, War Memorial, Suru Valley.
Padum is the most populated town of Zanskar that is inhabited by around 2000 people. Padum is becoming a popular trekking base and is being visited by a large number of tourists. There are a number of places which are attractions for tourists.
In the close vicinity of Padum are rock carvings from the 8th century, made on a large rock on the banks of the river Lung-nak below the old- town. It is a proof that there was an influence of Buddhism even in the ancient India and this place has existed since that time. It was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Zanskar.
Padum has Zanskar valley in the background and is easily accessible by road. It is around 240 kms away from the main road from the Kargil town.
In the same manner as the other destinations in Ladakh that are covered with snow in the extreme winter season, the best time to visit is between the months of June and October.
The town of Padum has around two Buddhist monasteries. First is Stagrimo Monastery that is home to around 30 lamas, is located on a tree-covered ridge just above the old-part of the town, where one has to walk upwards along the slopes of the hills. Then, after the cultivated land, there is the old village of Pibiting, which has another monastery on the hilltop, built in the shape of a Stupa.
This small town also has a small mosque too for the community of Sunni Muslims residing in this place from past 17th century.
Karsha Gustor, Zanskar, also known as Spitok Gutor Zanskar is the major festival of this place, celebrated in the month of January. During the festival, the famous Black Hat dance is performed. This is a masked dance performance (performed by the Monks of the Geluk-pa) is done to ward off any kind of evil from the valley. The festival comes to a conclusion after the cutting and the distribution ceremony of the sacrificial cake.
The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar is well known for the "Dal Lake", house-boats, dry fruit, saffron and traditional Kashmiri handicrafts like handwoven woollen shawls, carpets and rugs.
